Dawn Crandall's Everstone Chronicles Release in Paperback!

Dawn Crandall is an ACFW Carol-nominated author of the award winning series The Everstone Chronicles from Whitaker House. The series consists of three books: The Hesitant Heiress, The Bound Heart and The Captive Imposter. 

Without a doubt about someday becoming traditionally published, her husband encouraged her to quit working in order to focus on writing The Hesitant Heiress  from  2010  to 2012 . It didn’t take her long to realize that writing books was what she was made to do. Dawn is represented by Joyce Hart of Hartline Literary. Apart from writing books, Dawn is also a first-time mom to a precious little boy (born March 2014) and also serves with her husband in a pre-marriage mentor program at their local church in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Dawn, how would you sum up your Everstone Chronicles?

 They are deeply emotional love stories told through the first person point of view of the heroine as she discovers who she’s really meant to be… and also who she is meant to fall in love with.

Is there a take away you hope your readers get from each book?

Oh yes, definitely! In The Hesitant Heiress, the main theme has to do with harboring misplaced guilt, and also forgiveness. In The Bound Heart, the theme is again guilt, but on a much more personal level, and then the redemption that comes through Christ. In The Captive Imposter, the theme has more to do with being who God has called you to be, despite circumstances.  

The Everstone Chronicles have done well in eBook form. You must be elated to have them coming out in paperback. Share with us, if you will, what it was like for you opening your first box of paperbacks.

It’s all been a little hard to believe! Since Whitaker House released my debut novel as an eBook thirteen months before releasing the paperbacks, I had a hard time convincing myself that the success of the series was real and not just a trick my internet was playing on me! Even now, getting the box of paperbacks in the mail this late in the game feels like a joke. Is this really real? I got my box author copies of The Bound Heart today, in fact! And I still felt the same—IS THIS REAL? It’s hard to explain.

**It will probably be a while before my next books are published and available though. I’ve had a crazy last year having a baby and launching The Hesitant Heiress, The Bound Heart and The Captive Imposter. They were the only three books I’d written, and now I have to play catch-up!

Dawn, I'm so glad to have you here back at my blog this week! Welcome! Please give us an update—tell us about your latest release, The Captive Imposter.

Sent away for protection, hotel heiress Estella Everstone finds herself living undercover as a lady’s companion named Elle Stoneburner at one of her father’s opulent hotels in the mountains of Maine—the one she'd always loved best and always hoped to one day own, Everston. The one thing she doesn't like about the situation is that her ex-fiancé is in the area and is set on marrying someone else. Reeling from her feelings of being unwanted and unworthy, Estella reluctantly forms a friendship with the gruff manager of Everston, Dexter Blakeley, who seems to have something against wealthy young socialites with too much money, although they are just the kind of people Everston caters to.

When Estella finds herself in need of help, Dexter comes to the rescue with an offer she can't refuse. She sees no other choice aside from going back home to her family and accepts the position as companion to his sister. Throughout her interactions with Dexter, she can't deny the pull that's evidenced between them every time he comes near. Estella realizes that while she's been hiding behind a false name and identity, she’s never been freer to be herself than when she's with Dexter Blakeley. But will he still love her when he finds out she's Estella Everstone? She's not entirely sure.

You’ve done a marvelous job in your novels of transporting your reader into upper class Boston society and life at their summer resort. How did you go about your research?

I don’t really feel that I do a lot of “work” researching my novels… I just come across things from history that get my imagination going and then my characters show up! I attribute much of this ability to easily day-dreams things up to my ADD. I can get lost in my imagination so quickly, and so deeply! I love finding photographs online—even way before Pinterest was a thing! A photograph can transport me so quickly! 

Has being a busy mom of a little toddler had an effect on your writing? How do you find time to write and handle marketing in your busy day?

It’s been crazy and rough! I wasn’t getting much writing done while launching The Hesitant Heiress and The Bound Heart within three months of each other! By the time I had time to catch my breath, it was December and The Captive Imposter was set to release on February 1^st! Fortunately Whitaker House understood my predicament and valued the time and energy I put in on launching those first two books. I rewrote the last half of The Captive Imposter in December and January and turned it in on the day it was originally set to release. Honestly, I don’t even remember how I did it! It’s all a blur to me now! God got me through it though—there’s no doubt about that! I’ve been planning and outlining my next book, and I plan to begin writing it in May.

Do you have a life verse or a guiding principle from scripture that has affected your writing?

I like to include the theme that God works all things together to bless those who love Him. He knows what is best for us through every day and phase of our lives, and even though it may not seem that things are going the way we want, or even that some difficult things happen to us… He uses EVERYTHING to eventually bring out ways to bless us in ways we could have never imagined. 

I agree, Dawn! He cares so deeply for His children and has a plan for each of us.

Would you care to share about what you will be working on next?

Yes! I’m not sure of the name yet, but Book 4 is definitely in the works! I really look forward to writing Vance Everstone and Violet Hawthorne’s story! It’s not technically part of The Everstone Chronicles, but a new yet-to-be-named three book series about some minor characters readers will have met while reading this first series. I’ve never written an “anti-hero” like Vance before, but I’m super excited! The story will start out at Everston, but will then move back to the Boston setting. Readers will visit some of the settings from the first two books again, plus some new, not so ritzy places too.

Interview with Dawn Crandall - Writing Gilded Age Romance

Dawn Crandall didn't begin writing until her husband found out about her long-buried dream of writing a book. Thank you for joining me on my blog today, Dawn. Please tell us about your latest book:

One accidental kiss. That was all it took to throw Meredyth Summercourt's world upside-down. Determined to marry the ever-elusive Vance Everstone, she simply doesn't have the time or the desire to fall for her friend Lawry Hampton. However, with Vance out of the country and Lawry constantly at her side, Meredyth can’t help but wonder if what’s holding her to Vance is nothing more than a desire to redeem herself from their unfortunate past.

When Vance comes home to stake his claim on Meredyth, will she be strong enough to break free from the tangled web she’s convinced she deserves? Or will she find the strength to accept that God’s plan for her life could include redemption... and quite possibly the love of her best-friend?

What led you to write this story?

When I was in the middle of writing my first book in 2010 I kind of got to the point that I didn’t know how to get to the end. Nanowrimo (national novel writing month, every November) came up, and I decided I needed to get into someone else's head for a change. So I took Meredyth's character from The Hesitant Heiress and started figuring out what exactly was going on between her and Lawry (and Vance)—as evidenced in how they were behaving towards one another in THH. I also wanted to prove to myself that I could write another character from first person POV and have her not sound like Amaryllis Brigham in book one. By the following November I had an agent and my first book finished—so that’s when I dug out my 50,000 words from my 2010 Nanowrimo jaunt and started forming it into the novel The Bound Heart is now.

How do you schedule or find time for your writing? What does your average day look like?

Now that I have a baby, I write whenever I have the chance—which doesn’t seem that often compared to how I used to be able to write all day long! My average day is very baby-focused.

As a Christian author, what do you feel is the best way to weave God’s truth into your story?

With writing the character arc of my heroine, I also include a very strong spiritual journey arc as well. The main reasons anyone (my characters included) do anything is influenced by their personality, their past experiences and how they view God and His love for them. I love figuring this out for my characters. 

What is your favorite book of the Bible? Would you care to share why?

Romans is my favorite book—although it is incredibly deep and theological, I took a class on the entire book in college from a most amazing Bible scholar, and ever since then, it has been my favorite.

How has the Lord led you to become a writer? (What is your writing testimony?)

Ever since I was in 4th grade, the idea of writing a book has appealed to me. I remember my teacher had us choose some contact paper for the "cover" and then bound papers together for us—I thought that was so cool!! And I couldn't wait to fill it with a story!! Don't ask me what I ever wrote in that little book, but I do know that from then on my favorite time in school was when we were supposed to write something. :) I never thought of "being a writer" until I was in high school and (finally!) came across the kinds of books that thrilled me to read—Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott... and then later in college, books by Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters.

I'd made up some stories for my friends at the time and wrote out synopsis-like drafts, but nothing beyond that. At that time it was still just a dream of mine that I didn't know when I'd ever get around to actually being serious about. It wasn't until I married my husband in my late twenties and he found out the hidden secret of my heart... and believed in me 110% more than I'd ever believed in myself. He eventually had me quit working to focus on writing, and in 2010 I began writing The Hesitant Heiress (Book 1 of The Everstone Chronicles). It was pretty clear to me that I was on the right track when I had two offers of agent representation after attending my first ACFW conference in 2011 and then continued to either semi-final or final in the Genesis Contest with all three of my manuscripts in 2012 and 2013.
